Daniel Wilkens is a lifelong resident of the Fertile and Crookston area. He graduated from high school at the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston. He received a B.S. Degree in Agricultural Engineering and Agricultural Economics from the University of Minnesota. He retired from farming in 1987. He became interested in water management as a child, observing the flood devastation experienced by his family and neighbors. In May of 1975, he established the Sand Hill River Watershed District to address flooding problems in his area and was an active board manager until resigning in 1999 to assume his current position of Administrator.
