Project # 9A
The Sand Hill River Watershed district installed riprap at four erosion protection areas along the Sand Hill River. Three of these areas are located
in the vicinity of the city of Fertile in sections 20 and 29
of Garfield Township. The fourth site is located in the NW
1/4 of section 28, Liberty Township.
The banks along the Sand Hill River were eroding serverlying in these four locations. The three in Garfield Township were destroying the newly built Sand Hill River Golf Course and the location in Liberty Township, if left unattended, would have the potential to allow the Sand Hill River to leave the watershed and cross the boundaries flowing South into the Wild Rice Watershed District.
The East Polk Soil Conservation District and area Soil Conservation Service supported this project by devoting staff support to data collection , computer entry and monitoring of land use. Local support through testing programs, staff involvement and cash equalled $42,315 which combined witn the
$35,485 requested of the LCMR equals a total project cost of $77,800. The MnPCA and DNR were minimally involved in an advisory capacity throughout this project.
